Allstate vs. State Farm: An Overview

Oct 13, 2023 By Susan Kelly

If you've looked around for insurance, chances are you're acquainted with State Farm and Allstate. They're the two largest automobile insurance firms available, and they each cover millions of people worldwide. State Farm and Allstate are famous for their car insurance options, but you can take advantage of a wide range of policies like renters, home business, pet, and life insurance.

State Farm and Allstate are among the top insurance firms; however, they both have advantages and disadvantages. We compared the two companies and found that Allstate is a better provider overall. Allstate offers more policies in comparison to State Farm, plus more discounts. But, State Farm has a greater network of agents, which is beneficial if you prefer working with your agency in person.

Customer Service

Allstate, along with State Farm, both have good services for customers. Support can be requested via phone, during office hours, by downloading their mobile application (if you're an existing policyholder) and logging into the customer portal on the internet, or by going to one of their agents in person at the local office. Support for specific policies, such as business or life insurance, is available only by phone and in person.

Claims

State Farm and Allstate have mobile and online claims systems; however, they are only available for claims for home, auto, renters' insurance, and repair to windshields. You must contact the business directly if you're looking to claim another type of insurance. The process is the same whether you make claims online or via phone. You'll be asked for your policy number, write a brief description of the claim and provide photographs if you have proof of the damages. After that, you'll receive an adjustment specialist who will contact you to explain the claim process and the policy.

Customer Satisfaction

In our comparison of providers review, we examined online reviews of the past and present policyholders of Both Allstate and State Farm. Generally, both firms have mostly favorable reviews, and customers have praised rapid claim processing, quick assistance at the roadside, reasonable premiums, and helpful mobile tools. Most negative reviews about Allstate or State Farm are from customers who believe they did not receive adequate money after filing an incident or a claim was rejected. Some customers have had difficulty getting in contact with representatives and also had problems with billing. Your agent can offer you the highest level of customer service; however, since they have a lot of policyholders, it can make it more complicated to contact them.

Getting A Quote

When you compare insurance providers' rates, getting quotes from rate providers is a vital element of the procedure. It is good to know that State Farm and Allstate offer online rates for the majority of the products that they offer. It is possible to get an estimate by contacting an agent if you prefer. The process of getting an estimate is identical for every company. You'll need to supply details about yourself, such as your birthday date, Social Security number, and address, in addition to details pertinent to the insurance policy you're purchasing.

Since Allstate and State Farm work with independent agents, selecting an agent you are at ease with is crucial. If you cannot build an acquaintance with the initial agent you meet with, it's worth looking for another in the area you live in. When you request an online quote or over the phone, it should only take a few seconds. If you get an online quote, you'll have the choice to store the estimate and come back to it in the future, so there's no need to buy an insurance policy immediately.

Car Insurance Discounts

Discounts for auto insurance can differ if you get the rate quote from an insurance agent; make sure to inquire about discounts you are eligible for. Allstate auto insurance is a great option for several discounts that one might expect from a driver, like bunding, good student, multi-policy, multi-vehicle, and military discounts. However, you might find that Allstate insurance does not offer customers loyalty, employer, teacher discounts, and low mileage discounts.

State Farm's discount on the auto insurance list is like Allstate's but does not include discounts for military personnel. Similar to Allstate, State Farm doesn't provide discounts for teachers or any other affiliation or employment-based organizations, in addition to not offering online bill-pay or upfront discounts on payments.

In our study of customers who had not filed claims, Allstate had a 43 percent highly satisfied rate of customers who were interested in discounts, and State Farm's customers had a satisfaction rate of 42. For those who did file a claim, Allstate customers who were extremely satisfied by discounts dropped to 32%, whereas State Farm's customers' high satisfaction decreased to 39 percent.
